Writing buyer requests that get real offers
· 3 min read
Clear budgets, honest deadlines and reference photos triple the responses your request receives.
A buyer request turns the marketplace around: instead of searching for sellers, you describe what you need and let sellers come to you. The requests that fill up with serious offers are almost always the ones that are specific, honest and easy to price.
Say exactly what you want
"Need a laptop" produces guesswork. "Need a 13-inch laptop, 8GB RAM minimum, 256GB SSD, foreign used acceptable, for university work" produces quotes. Include brand or model where it matters, the condition you will accept, quantity, size, colour, and anything that would make an item unusable for you.
Give a real budget
Sellers skip requests with no budget because they cannot tell whether replying is worth their time. A realistic range does the filtering for you — the sellers who cannot meet it move on, and the ones who reply are already close to your number. If you are flexible, say so and explain what would justify paying more.
Be honest about the deadline
Marking everything urgent trains sellers to ignore urgency. If you genuinely need the item this week, say the date and why. If you have a month, say that too — sellers often offer better prices when they are not rushing logistics.
Add reference photos
One reference photo removes more confusion than three paragraphs. A picture of the exact fabric, the part you are replacing, the model label or a similar product tells a seller instantly whether they can supply it.
State your location properly
Give your state and LGA. Delivery cost and speed shape almost every offer you receive, and a seller in the same city will usually beat a seller three states away on both.
Handle the replies well
- Reply to serious offers quickly, even if the answer is no.
- Compare at least two or three offers before committing.
- Confirm condition, warranty, delivery and total cost in writing before paying.
- Close the request once you have bought, so sellers stop spending time on it.
Your contact details stay protected until you choose to share them. Keep conversations on channels you are comfortable with, and never send payment to secure a place in a queue for an item you have not verified.
